"I Didn't Know Fashion Could Tell a Story" - Kelly Miller Middle School in Washington D.C.

A Student's Perspective on the Be iCONiQ Media Arts Program

When I first heard that we were going to learn about fashion in film, I thought we were just going to talk about clothes.

I was wrong.

The Be iCONiQ Media Arts Program showed me that fashion is about so much more than what people wear. It's about telling stories, expressing ideas, and helping people understand who a character is before they even say a word.

One of the things that surprised me most was learning that every outfit in a movie or television show is chosen for a reason. The colors, the shoes, the accessories, and even the way clothes fit can help tell the audience something important about a character.

Before this program, I never really thought about who creates those looks. I didn't know there were jobs like costume designer, stylist, creative director, or wardrobe supervisor. I always thought the actors just showed up wearing clothes.

Now I know there are entire teams working behind the scenes to bring stories to life.

My favorite part of the program was learning how fashion helps build a character. We looked at examples and talked about how different outfits could make a person seem confident, powerful, creative, funny, or even mysterious.

It made me realize that fashion can be a form of communication.

The program also helped me think about my own future. Sometimes adults ask us what we want to be when we grow up, and it's hard to answer because we don't know all the possibilities. The Media Arts Program introduced careers I had never heard of before and showed me that creative careers are real careers.

I learned that creativity can be a job.

I also liked that everyone was encouraged to share their ideas. There wasn't just one right answer. We got to think critically, ask questions, and see how different people interpreted the same concepts in different ways.

That made me feel more confident speaking up and sharing my thoughts.

What I enjoyed most was realizing that something I see every day clothing can actually have a deeper meaning. It made me pay attention to movies, television shows, and even the people around me in a different way.

The Be iCONiQ Media Arts Program didn't just teach me about fashion in film.

It taught me to look closer.

It taught me to think creatively.

And it showed me that there are careers and opportunities I never knew existed.

Most importantly, it showed me that my ideas matter.

I hope more students get the opportunity to participate in programs like this because you never know what passion you might discover until someone gives you the chance to explore it.

Thank you, Be iCONiQ, for helping us see what's possible.
